I am upgrading my boiler and am trying to decide whether I should get an on demand hot water system or the conventional separate hot water tank. Which is more energy efficient and what are the downsides of each.

on demand are way more efficient. but are also more money to buy. they are fairly easy to work on im not sure what those other guys are talking about. cont use a plumber use a hvac company they will know how to work on and maintain. the on demand is the way to go if you can afford. the only upside to a standard water heater is initial cost, which you will more than make up for. a on demand has a warranty twice as long as the tanked unit you never run out of water they take up less space and there and they are ten times as efficient as a standard tanked unit.
on demand is more efficient on occasion in the winter its takes a while to get hot water to the taps but the money saving is worth the inconvenience
On-demand heaters are efficient, unless you have hard water or high minerals. If you decide on one, make sure there are places near you that do maintenance and repair work on them. Plumbers will install them, but they are a bear to work on and many will not do the work.
